DAHLIAS: Native to Central America, the genus Dahlia was named in honor of Anders Dahl, an 18th century Swedish botanist. From just a handful of original species Dahlias have been hybridized over the centuries into an amazingly diversified genus, with plant sizes from 1 ft. to 7 ft. tall, and flowers in almost any color imaginable from 2 to 12 inches across. Dahlias are tender perennials, and should not be planted out until the danger of heavy frost is gone, but they can be given a head start in pots and set out after the last frost. Dahlias grow best in well-drained soil that is liberally enriched with composted organic matter and benefit from the addition of ΒΌ cup of low nitrogen organic fertilizer mixed into the planting bed for each tuber. A 6' bamboo stake can be driven in beside tall varieties at planting time. For exquisite and long-lasting cut flowers, cut nearly mature flowers in early morning or evening and immediately place cut stems into 2-3 inches of hot water, allowing them to stand in gradually cooling water for several hours. Dahlias will not overwinter in USDA Zone 6 or lower, so they can be lifted and stored after the first frost, or they can be treated as annuals and re-purchased every spring. Either way, they will add an exotic and long-lasting display to your garden from late spring through frost.
