How to Grow Japanese Painted Fern: Plant Athyrium in loamy, humus-rich soil in a shade to part-shade location. While Japanese ferns can tolerate some dryness once established, they grow best when provided with regular moisture. Lush, finely textured fronds that have a graceful arching habit characterize Japanese ferns. Plant these shade-loving perennials in groups of three or more for maximum visual impact. While a vigorous grower, this showy fern is not invasive and spreads slowly.
