JAPANESE MAPLE: Acer palmatum Bene Schichihenge . This beautifully variegated dwarf Japanese maple is perfect for small yards, water features, and patio containers. Matures to about 6' in the landscape. Protect from afternoon sun and wind. Our 1 gallon 2-3 year old grafted Japanese maples are 3-4' tall when shipped.
How to grow Acer palmatum and Acer palmatum dissectum Japanese maples: Grow in rich garden soil that stays evenly moist but is also well-drained. Depending on the variety, grow in full sun, sun with afternoon shade, or light shade. Green-leaved types are the most sun tolerant, while the red laceleaf and variegated varieties need shade from afternoon sun. A site with protection from wind also helps. All varieties will grow well in dappled shade, but leaf color and fall color is enhanced with at least a half day of morning sun. The soil should be rich in organic matter to retain moisture evenly through the hottest months to prevent sunburn. Sunburn or scorching can be alleviated with drip irrigation, as drops of water from overhead sprinklers can act like magnifying glasses and create sunburnt spots.
