JAPANESE MAPLE: Acer palmatum Bloodgood. The most popular large-leaved deep red upright Japanese maple. Strong, hardy and easy to grow. Its 25-30' mature height makes it an excellent street tree or small yard specimen tree. Our 1 gallon 2-3 year old grafted Japanese maples are about 3-4' tall when shipped. Our Japanese Maples are 36" tall when we ship them and nicely branched grown in standard nursery 1 gallon containers. A great value for a wonderfule plant that will thrive in your garden for years to come!
How to grow Acer palmatum and Acer palmatum dissectum Japanese maples: Grow in rich garden soil that stays evenly moist but is also well-drained. Depending on the variety, grow in full sun, sun with afternoon shade, or light shade. Green-leaved types are the most sun tolerant, while the red laceleaf and variegated varieties need shade from afternoon sun. A site with protection from wind also helps. All varieties will grow well in dappled shade, but leaf color and fall color is enhanced with at least a half day of morning sun. The soil should be rich in organic matter to retain moisture evenly through the hottest months to prevent sunburn. Sunburn or scorching can be alleviated with drip irrigation, as drops of water from overhead sprinklers can act like magnifying glasses and create sunburnt spots.
